Wakabayashi Junko /
Wakabayashi Junko is the second piece in Ding-Yeh WANG's Family History – Story Project, and it recounts the life of a Japanese girl born in Manchuria, who married a rich Chinese man in order to survive after Japan lost the war, and took on the name Yulin escaping to Taiwan, where she ends up spending the rest of her life. Yulin has lost contact with her Japanese family and has spent her entire life searching for the woman named, “Wakabayashi Junko”. Yulin's granddaughter has recorded down her life in writing, and artist Ding-Yeh WANG has invited Yulin's family members to collectively create the artwork based on the written record. Through the process of constructing the writing, this family restarts/re-composes a collective memory, with a new shared dialogue initiated. The family's self-identity has also been brought together through the re-opening of the memory that has been concealed for so long. Wang has transformed the writing into a video piece and has presented it to the family as a gift, with this family's story deeply imprinted in everyone's memories.
